SPARKS IN LOVE: A Survivor’s Story

Imagine you are an attractive, high-powered, wealthy, college-educated female executive who realizes that her twenty-year relationship has turned her into a victim of domestic abuse. Imagine there are children to consider. And imagine the emotional abuse you have endured throughout the years, abuse that has escalated as you questioned your own culpability in allowing it, becomes physical and potentially fatal.

Every year, domestic abuse – whether physical, financial, or mental – affects1 in 4 women in the country. On average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States — more than 12 million women and men over the course of a year. That’s more than are affected by breast, ovarian, and lung cancers combined.

One survivor’s story, SPARKS IN LOVE is every survivor’s story. It documents the torture, torment, and triumph of living through and escaping domestic abuse. It’s a living, breathing, true account of a life that goes on because the victim would not quit, will not quit, and does not quit. The “she” is Susan Sparks, the pseudonym of an atypical abuse victim. If it can happen to her, it can happen to anyone. And more often than we realize, it does.
More than just a book, SPARKS IN LOVE is one part of a comprehensive set of touchpoints designed to educate women about the warning signs the person they love might become an abuser; to keep women from becoming involved in abusive relationships; and to help women who are trapped in abusive relationships to become SODAs™: Survivors Of Domestic Abuse.

Having escaped her abusive marriage and now beginning a new life as an independent mother and businesswoman, Susan shares her story as a cautionary tale to those entering relationships as well as reassurance to those still enmeshed in abusive relationships that there are, indeed, safe ways out and life after abuse. Eminently readable, poignant and informative, compelling and horrifying, in the end, SPARKS IN LOVE is an inspirational telling of one woman’s story that becomes everywoman’s story for the one in four women who become victims of abuse and the friends, families, and communities who will watch it happen.
